Is Meta’s workforce leaner and more focused?

Meta is making changes again, leading to some employees getting laid off across departments like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs.

Instead of a large, company-wide layoff, these cuts are more like smaller adjustments as teams reorganize. Some Meta employees have shared their experiences on social media after being laid off.

The buzz is that certain teams are reorganizing to better align their resources with long-term goals and location strategies. This means moving teams around and shifting employees into different roles. If a position is eliminated, Meta is trying to find new opportunities for those affected within the company.

It seems there are more changes on the way, focusing on downsizing. In August 2024, Meta announced plans to reduce their office space in Lagos by shifting to a desk-sharing model for employees who aren’t in the office often. This is part of their strategy to cut down on real estate costs.

While it’s unclear if these new layoffs will impact employees in Africa, this follows a challenging period for Meta. In April 2023, the company laid off about 4,000 employees across various technical teams, including those working on Facebook, Instagram, Reality Labs, and WhatsApp.

This mass layoff came after CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement in February 2023 that the company would be cutting another 10,000 jobs in the coming months. Earlier, in November 2022, Meta had already let go of 11,000 employees as part of their efforts to streamline operations.
