On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, Intelsat, a satellite services provider, announced the launch of a new satellite cellular backhaul service in Lagos, Nigeria. This service aims to improve connectivity in Nigeria and across Africa.
Called Intelsat CellBackhaul Nigeria, this new service is designed to help mobile network operators (MNOs) and Internet service providers (ISPs) in Nigeria and West Africa. It will make it easier for them to expand mobile coverage quickly and affordably using Intelsat’s satellite and ground networks.
The solution will also connect to existing systems in other African countries, reaching millions of people through thousands of cell towers. Since 2018, Intelsat and Africa Mobile Networks (AMN) have installed over 3,000 satellite antennas in rural areas across Africa, bringing telecommunications services to more than 8 million people by 2023. They plan to expand further in Madagascar, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Intelsat reported that in sub-Saharan Africa, there are still significant gaps in mobile usage and coverage—59% and 15%, respectively. Nearly half of the 400 million people without mobile broadband live in this area. The high costs and slow progress of traditional infrastructure are major obstacles, especially in rural locations.
Rhys Morgan, a representative from Intelsat, highlighted the importance of satellite technology in bridging the digital divide. He said that satellite backhaul is often the best option for providing quick and reliable connectivity to people in remote areas.
Intelsat CellBackhaul will allow for the affordable expansion of cellular broadband to regions where traditional networks can’t reach. This service will provide vital connectivity that benefits individuals, businesses, and emergency services daily.
