Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has shared his preference for traditional Orisa worship over Christianity and Islam, citing a deeper fascination with its beliefs and practices.
In an interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, Soyinka explained that he feels the faith expressed in Orisa worship is more profound and creative than that found in the other two religions. He noted that while he appreciates aspects of both Christianity and Islam, he finds Orisa worship to be more artistic and mysterious.
“I was fortunate to be born into both the Christian world and among traditional Orisa worshippers,” he said. “My grandfather, who was a chief, was an Orisa worshipper until he converted. His beliefs fascinated me greatly.”
Soyinka emphasized that Orisa worship is open and inclusive, allowing for the blending of ideas. He remarked, “It is one of those African religions that eschew violence, making it unique compared to other religions.”
He further stated, “I don’t believe in the Islamic or Christian God. If that makes me an atheist, then I accept that label.” He believes everyone has a spiritual core and considers himself to be particularly sensitive to spiritual matters.
Soyinka’s reflections highlight the importance of cultural identity and personal experience in shaping one’s beliefs.
