I sacrificed my marriage for my acting career – Yetunde Wunmi

In a candid interview on Wednesday, October 9, veteran Yoruba actress Yetunde Wunmi shared the profound sacrifices she made for her enduring career in the performing arts.

At 64 years old, she reflected on her journey, which began in 1982 when she joined Sunday Akinola’s ‘Feyi Kogbon’ theatre group as a stage performer.

Throughout her nearly four-decade experience in the film industry, Wunmi revealed that her devotion to acting ultimately led to the dissolution of her marriage. “I lost my marriage due to my love for this theatre. But I never regretted being an actress since then because God has been gracious to me,” she expressed.

Wunmi recalled a pivotal moment that ignited her passion for the stage: “I cannot forget Adelove. He brought the stage drama to Danjuma film close to where I lived then.

“He wore all white that day and came with a white car. Everybody ran towards him and I also went closer to make sure I touched his clothes. I was very happy. I felt like I touched a gold. That was when I developed interest in theatre.”

Her reflections reveal the deep personal costs of pursuing a dream, yet also the immense fulfillment it has brought her life.
