#EdoDecides2024: INEC uploads 88% of polling unit results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded over 88% of polling unit result sheets from Saturday’s Edo State Governorship Election on its Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

As of 6:40 pm on Saturday, 3,995 out of 4,519 polling units had their results uploaded.

The election saw residents cast ballots to choose a successor to incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose eight-year tenure ends November 12, 2024.

Edo is one of eight states with off-season governorship elections due to litigations and court judgments, alongside Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo.

INEC reported 2,629,025 registered voters and 4,519 polling units in Edo State, with 2,249,780 (85.57%) holding Permanent Voters’ Cards.

Seventeen candidates contested, but analysts describe it as a three-horse race between Asue Ighodalo (PDP), Monday Okpebholo (APC), and Olumide Akpata (Labour Party).

Ighodalo, backed by Obaseki, faces opposition from Okpebholo, supported by Obaseki’s deputy Philip Shaibu and former governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Party strongholds include APC in Edo North and Central, and Labour Party in Edo South.
