Edo State prepares for election day with movement restrictions
On Thursday, September 19, 2024, the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, announced that there will be restrictions on movement in Edo State in preparation for the upcoming governorship election on Saturday, September 21, 2024. This is to help make sure the election is peaceful, fair, and clear.
According to a report by The PUNCH, at least 17 political parties will take part in the election, including the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the Labour Party.
In a statement on Friday, September 20, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi explained that no cars or boats will be allowed to move from 6 AM to 6 PM on election day. However, people doing important jobs, like media workers, election officials, ambulances, and emergency responders, can still travel.
Adejobi shared, “The Inspector-General of Police has announced comprehensive security measures to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process during the upcoming Edo off-cycle election scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.”
He also said that to keep the voting process safe, no security guards or escorts will be allowed near polling stations, and unauthorized security personnel must stay away. Additionally, using sirens on vehicles that aren’t allowed is strictly forbidden, helping to keep the area calm for voters.
The Inspector-General wants everyone to feel included. “Special attention will be given to people with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and older adults,” he said, ensuring that polling places are easy for everyone to access.
Adejobi reminded people not to prank the emergency numbers the police will provide for the election. He said, “The Inspector-General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector-General for Edo Gubernatorial Election, DIG Frank Emeka Mba, has asked citizens not to make prank calls to control room numbers, emphasizing that text messages are more helpful.”
For any questions or emergencies, the designated numbers are:
– DIG Frank Mba: 07025000383
– AIG Benneth Igwe: 09085000029
– General control room: 08077773721 and 08037646272.
Adejobi encouraged everyone to report anything unusual that might disturb the election. “Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or incidents that may jeopardize the integrity of the electoral process,” he said.
The Inspector-General also emphasized the importance of following these rules to ensure a smooth election. He urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to act responsibly and follow the law, stating that any rule-breaking will be dealt with seriously.
“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to promoting a safe and democratic environment,” Adejobi concluded, expressing hope that the upcoming elections in Edo will be held fairly and peacefully.
