The Edo House of Assembly has spoken out against the decision by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to ban the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) from polling units during the upcoming governorship election.
On Thursday, September 12, Charity Aiguobarueghian, the Majority Leader of the House, told reporters in Benin that the ESSN was created in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution and will continue its work despite the IGP’s order.
The IGP had announced on Wednesday, September 11, that the activities of the ESSN would be suspended until further notice. He explained that this move was intended to ensure transparency in the gubernatorial election scheduled for Saturday, September 21.
Egbetokun stated that the police were the only authority responsible for securing the election and warned the ESSN to stay away from polling areas.
However, Aiguobarueghian argued that only a court can order the suspension of the ESSN. She highlighted the crucial role the ESSN plays in keeping people safe, especially in rural areas of the state.
“The Edo State House of Assembly, based on its powers outlined in Section 4 of the Constitution, has the authority to make laws for maintaining peace and order in the state,” Aiguobarueghian said. She also pointed out that Edo State is one of 23 states with a local community police network designed to ensure security and order.
