PDP governors upset over Wike’s threats to ‘set their states on fire’

Governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed strong disapproval of a recent threat made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike. Wike had warned that he would “set their states on fire” if they interfered in Rivers State’s party affairs.

The PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Bala Mohammed, issued a statement on Tuesday, September 3, through its Director General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, criticizing Wike’s threats as reckless and unacceptable.

The statement highlighted that Wike’s threats have become widely known on social media. Despite these threats, the governors reaffirmed their support for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, ensuring he receives all the rights and privileges due to governors within the party.

The statement read, in part: “The statements and threats made by Wike to ‘Put fire’ in the PDP-controlled states are irresponsible and totally unacceptable. They undermine efforts to build peace, cohesion, and mutual respect within the party.”

It continued, “It is unfortunate that this is coming from someone who was once a member of this respected forum as a former governor. The Forum has always upheld a ‘touch one, touch all’ philosophy, standing by and supporting each other regardless of the circumstances.”

The statement also emphasized that the Forum’s position on Rivers State, decided during meetings in Enugu and Taraba States, will not be altered by any individual, no matter their status.

The governors stressed their commitment to working with the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP to ensure Governor Siminalayi Fubara receives all the privileges due to him.

“The PDP values unity and collective progress. Recent actions by the governors, including their support for Governor Fubara, reflect this dedication. It is important for all members, including Wike, to work together towards common goals instead of pursuing personal conflicts.”

The Forum urged the NWC to use both official and unofficial channels to resolve the crisis in Rivers State. They also called on all parties involved to engage in dialogue and reconciliation to address grievances and strengthen the party.

Additionally, the Forum has asked national security agencies to take note of Wike’s threats, stating that no one is above the law.
