Bayelsa guber: Supreme Court backs Diri, dismisses APC’s appeal

The Supreme Court has confirmed the victory of Senator Douye Diri in the Bayelsa State governorship election.

On Friday, August 23, the Court dismissed the appeal filed by Timipre Sylva, the APC’s governorship candidate, as well as the APC’s challenge to the election results.

Justice Garba Lawal, who delivered the lead judgment, stated that the appeal was not only without merit but also constituted an abuse of court process.

The Supreme Court’s decision upheld the previous rulings of both the Court of Appeal and the Election Petition Tribunal.

Earlier, on July 18, the Court of Appeal in Abuja unanimously supported the Tribunal’s decision that confirmed Diri’s reelection on November 11, 2023.

The panel of the appellate court rejected Sylva and APC’s appeal, which sought to overturn the Tribunal’s ruling.

Previously, on May 27, the Justice Adekunle Adeleye-led Tribunal had dismissed APC’s and Sylva’s petition, finding it lacked substantial evidence to challenge Diri’s reelection.
