Nigerian filmmaker Seun Egbegbe has shared his harrowing experiences from his time in prison during a recent interview with actress Biola Adebayo on the ‘Talk to B’ podcast.
Egbegbe described his time in jail as profoundly challenging, noting that many inmates passed away while he was there. He spoke about his intense prayers for survival and his gratitude for making it through.
“People died every day in that prison. It is not a good place. I told God that if you truly exist, then I must leave here alive,” Egbegbe recounted.
He continued, “If you go and return, thank God. Know that He loves you and has given you a second chance to live. There is a cell for new prisoners; it’s called the ‘welcome cell’. If 20 people were brought in overnight, at least two would be found dead by the following morning.”
Seun Egbegbe was detained in February 2017 after being accused of defrauding 40 Bureau De Change operators of large sums of money. He faced charges involving N39,098,100, $90,000, and £12,550 in fraud.
Despite being granted bail of N5 million, he could not meet the conditions and remained in custody. Egbegbe was acquitted in 2022, concluding a five-year and eight-month period behind bars.
