Meta launches monetization tools for Kenya content creators

Meta has launched new monetization tools for eligible content creators in Kenya, effective August 6, 2024. These tools include in-stream ads and Facebook ads on reels, which can be placed before, during, or after videos, whether they are prerecorded or live-streamed.

This new feature supports content in over 30 languages globally, including Swahili, and aims to boost the earning potential of Kenyan creators. Moon Baz, Meta’s global partnership lead for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, stated that this initiative will not only help Kenyan creators earn money but also set a high standard for creativity worldwide.

To access these features, content creators must follow Facebook’s partner and content monetization policies, including being 18 years or older. For in-stream ads, creators need at least 5,000 followers and 60,000 total watch minutes over the past two months, among other requirements. In-stream ads can appear as pre-roll, mid-roll, image, or post-roll ads.

This rollout follows a proposal by President Ruto in December 2023 and a trial program for qualified creators in Kenya. In June 2024, Meta also approved monetization for creators in Nigeria and Ghana, after previously excluding these countries. Other countries benefiting from these ad-earning features include Egypt, South Africa, and Rwanda.

Facebook is popular in Kenya, with at least 52% of people aged 15 and older using the platform. In February 2022, Meta announced that content creators in 20 sub-Saharan African countries, including Kenya, would be able to earn from Facebook Reels and in-stream ads.
