35 minors dead in Ibadan funfair stampede, police arrest eight
A stampede at a funfair held at Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan, claimed the lives of 35 minors on Wednesday, leaving six others critically injured. The tragic incident has sparked widespread condemnation, including from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who vowed to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
Governor Makinde expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and pledged that the state government would ensure justice. “This is a deeply painful and preventable tragedy,” he said, adding that efforts are underway to uncover the circumstances leading to the stampede.
Police Arrest Eight Suspects
A day after the incident, the Oyo State Police Command announced the arrest of eight individuals linked to the disaster. Among them is Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, former queen of the Ooni of Ife and identified as the event’s main sponsor, as well as the school’s principal, Fasasi Abdulahi.
Other suspects in custody include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, “The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police leading the investigations.”
Ongoing Medical and Security Efforts
Osifeso confirmed that six injured individuals are receiving treatment. The police have ramped up security patrols across Ibadan to prevent potential unrest. “We urge residents not to panic as visible police presence is intended to maintain order and prevent hoodlums from exploiting the situation,” he said.
The tragedy has cast a spotlight in on safety and accountability at public events, with many calling for stricter oversight to prevent similar occurrences. Investigations continue as authorities work to bring closure to grieving families and ensure justice for the victims.
