28 suspects arrested over Yelewata killings in Benue

Less than a week after President Bola Tinubu issued a directive for swift action, 28 suspected masterminds of the killings in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, have been arrested.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday, stating that police operations are still ongoing to apprehend more individuals connected to the deadly attack.

The IGP affirmed that the police force remains fully capable of addressing the situation, noting that efforts are underway to recover light and small arms illegally held by individuals.

He also confirmed that the arrested suspects will soon be arraigned in court, alongside 22 others detained in Jos in connection with the brutal murder of nine travellers heading to Quanpan for a wedding.

The Yelewata massacre, which occurred a few weeks ago, involved suspected armed herders who reportedly killed around 200 people and razed properties across the community. The attack sparked national and international outrage, with figures such as Pope Leo XIV expressing sympathy for the victims.

President Tinubu visited Benue State in the wake of the tragedy and ordered the Inspector General of Police to ensure that those responsible were swiftly brought to justice.
