2026 World Cup: British media criticise Thomas Tuchel after England’s exit to Argentina
England manager Thomas Tuchel has come under heavy criticism from sections of the British media following the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
England took the lead through Anthony Gordon early in the second half but conceded twice in the closing stages as Argentina completed a late comeback to book their place in the final.
Several British newspapers questioned Tuchel’s tactical decisions, particularly his defensive substitutions after England went ahead.
The Sun led its coverage with the headlines “Lost his Tuch?” and “Thomas tanked it,” while the Daily Mail argued that Tuchel’s changes left England without attacking options when they needed them most.
According to the report, the German coach introduced defenders Dan Burn and Ezri Konsa in an attempt to protect the lead, switching to a five-man defence that ultimately failed to stop Argentina’s late surge.
The Times columnist Martin Samuel also criticised Tuchel, suggesting England had once again fallen into the cautious approach that has affected the team at previous major tournaments.
Despite the criticism, reports indicate Tuchel is expected to remain in charge, with the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager still under contract until the 2028 European Championship.
